What are some healthy foods for someone with colon infection to eat?

April 8th, 2010 Categories: Food

The lady i babysit went to the doctor the other day and she found out she has a colon infection. She always eats fast food and she isn’t aloud to eat fast food anymore. What are some foods she might be able to eat that she will actually like. She hates eating healthy food and i know its kind of impossible to find foods she can eat that she will actually like, but any suggestions?

Fruits, especially citrus fruits and watermelon. Watermelon is a natural bowel-cleanser.

The lady with the infection ought to have gotten some specific information from her doctor about what she can and can’t eat. If she has diverticulitis, she should be on a semi-liquid diet for a day or two (taking heavy doses of antibiotics) and then move to the BRAT diet for another day or two. That’s bananas, rice, applesauce, toast. Then she can eat whatever she likes as long as it’s very low in fiber. Once the infection is gone, her doctor will tell her to eat lots of high-fiber foods, aiming at 30-35 grams a day.

If it’s another type of infection, she should still be on antibiotics, but a different form of diet may be required. Avoiding fast food isn’t enough. Really, her doctor is the one to advise her and there are alternatives to fast food — maybe some veggie burgers would help. But she’s got to get her physician’s okay on whatever she eats.

Well while she has the infection the doctor should have given her some instructions on what to eat. Is she allowed to eat normally is she supposed to be eating soft foods? Is she on anti-biotics? Yogurt would be a great thing for her to eat since anti-biotics kill the healthy intestinal flora, and since a lack of intestinal flora leads to colon infections.

To prevent future infections she really needs to eat less fast foods and more healthy food. Lots of fiber and lots of water are especially helpful. Every day she needs to get at least 8 glasses of water, 25 grams of fiber and 6oz of yogurt to keep her colon healthy. A good way to get more fiber is switching to whole grains and Kashi makes many tasty products like cookies and even pizza that have a lot of fiber. If she eats hard to digest foods like hard cheeses and red meat, she needs to get plenty of fiber along with it – such as if she eats a burger have it on a whole wheat bun and don’t skip the lettuce. She may not like to hear this but she’s going to need a lifestyle change to prevent more infections and in the long run to prevent colon cancer.
